Book lovers David and Maria wanted a welcoming and dedicated space to house their collection of 600 books. While their original room was a good size, they brought the NOOK team in to harness its potential and create a bespoke library and study space.
The customers’ Tynemouth property is a traditional Victorian terrace with stained glass detailing on the bay window. After reviewing the space and developing detailed design plans, we got started on building floor-to-ceiling shelving that followed the shape of the room while maintaining the original picture rail. It was important to navigate the angled doorway and ensure we didn’t detract from the beautiful period features.
We meticulously measured the cast iron fireplace and chimney breast to fit custom-made bookshelves. By handcrafting every element ourselves, we were able to attest to the tailor-made furniture’s quality, construction and finish.
Another unique feature our customers wanted us to include was an original drinks cabinet. We made sure this fit snuggly within a recess between two bookshelves. Farrow & Ball’s Stiffkey Blue and Wevet paint shades added a sophisticated and timeless finishing touch to the design, and David and Maria’s own furniture ties the whole look together perfectly. A wooden library ladder is a charming detail that also provides practical access to the top shelves.
Maria simply commented “WOW!” when she saw the results.
